The benchmark quoted most often is around 500 to 600 hours of study to reach B2, the level at which you can hold a meeting, argue a point and follow a film without subtitles, starting from close to zero. It is a rough number and it moves with how close your first language is to English, but it is a useful reality check against anyone promising fluency in three months.

In practice that translates roughly like this. At an intensive pace, around 20 hours a week between lessons and your own work, B2 is a six to ten month project. At around 10 hours a week it is closer to a year and a half. At one lesson a week with little practice in between, progress is real but slow, and it is measured in years rather than months. If you are already at B1, which many Polish learners are after school English, the remaining distance is far shorter than the headline number suggests.

The two variables you control are consistency and speaking time. Two 45-minute lessons a week beat one 90-minute lesson, because you forget less between them, and twenty minutes of daily listening or reading does more than a weekend cram. The reason 1-on-1 lessons move faster than a class is simply arithmetic: you get every minute of the teacher's attention, and every mistake gets corrected while you still remember making it.
