Start by creating a free student account. Registration takes a minute and includes a short placement quiz that puts you on the CEFR scale from A1 to C2, which is what lets teachers pitch that first conversation at the right level. You can skip ahead and come back to the quiz, but doing it first makes the consultation more useful.

Next, open the teacher directory and filter it down. Language, price ceiling, the languages a teacher speaks, what they specialise in. Read two or three profiles properly rather than ten quickly, the bio is where teachers say who they work best with. When one of them sounds like your situation, open their profile and choose the free consultation option, then either pick one of their published times or propose a time that suits you and add a sentence about what you want from lessons.

The request goes to the teacher, who confirms the time. You get a booking in your dashboard, shown in your own time zone, with a join button on it. At the appointed time you open the booking and press join, in the same browser you are reading this in, no Zoom link, no Teams account, no app to install. A laptop or phone with a camera and a microphone is the whole equipment list, and headphones mostly help by stopping echo.

Write down your goal in one concrete sentence before the call, with a deadline if you have one. Teachers hear "I want to be fluent" every week; they can do something immediately with "I need to run a weekly stand-up in English by autumn". Bring the artefact if there is one, the job advert, the exam format, the presentation you have to give.

Decide in advance what you want to test about the teacher, and then actually test it. If explanations in Polish matter to you, ask how much Polish they use. If pronunciation is your priority, ask them to correct you properly for two minutes and see how that feels. If you are nervous about speaking, say so at the start and watch what they do with the silence, because that reaction tells you more about the next six months than anything on the profile.

Two small practical things. Log in a couple of minutes early and let the browser check your camera and microphone, so the first three minutes are not spent on audio. And take thirty seconds afterwards to note what you thought while it is fresh, because if you meet two or three teachers over a couple of weeks they blur together surprisingly fast.

Most platforms advertise a trial lesson, meaning a discounted or free first paid lesson that you book, pay for or hand over a card for, and sit through as a lesson. It works, but it answers the wrong question first. You commit to a full hour with a stranger before you know whether you can stand their teaching style, and the platform gets your payment details before you have learned a single thing.

Vocabest inverts that. The free step is a short meeting whose only job is fit, no card, no checkout, nothing to unsubscribe from afterwards. The paid lesson comes second, when you already know who you are buying an hour from. It is also a genuinely free meeting rather than a loss-leader lesson, which is why it is one per account and why it goes back to you if it never takes place.

The consequence is that the money side stays simple. Each teacher sets their own hourly rate and it is on their card before you book anything. You pay for one lesson before it happens. There is no package to buy up front, no subscription and no minimum number of lessons, so nothing needs cancelling if you decide, after the consultation, that this was not the right teacher after all.
