Online English teaching jobs, at your own rate

Fluent or native-level English first, and the ability to teach it, which is not the same thing. Plenty of fluent speakers cannot explain why the present perfect is wrong in a sentence a student just produced, and plenty of people who can explain it are not native speakers. What students on Vocabest are buying is the explanation, the correction and the hour of structured speaking practice, so that is what your profile has to demonstrate.

No degree and no TEFL certificate are required to apply. That is a deliberate position rather than a loophole: an enormous share of the English-language content about teaching online exists to sell certificates, and a marketplace where students choose for themselves rewards demonstrated ability and reviews more reliably than credentials do. Qualifications still help, and they help most when they are specific, so if you have a CELTA, a philology degree, exam-board experience or years in a classroom, write it into your bio rather than assuming it is implied.

Your profile has to be complete before it goes live, and "complete" means a professional photo, a headline, a bio in your own words, the languages you teach and speak, your hourly rate and your availability. An intro video is optional and worth doing: a student choosing between two similar profiles will almost always pick the one where they have already heard the teacher speak. Profiles are reviewed by an admin before they appear in the directory, so expect a check rather than an instant publish, and expect to be asked for changes if something is missing.

For the launch market, one more thing matters: our students are Polish speakers learning English, mostly adults who want to speak with confidence, and teenagers preparing for the matura. Speaking Polish is not a requirement and many students specifically want a teacher who does not, but if you do speak it, say so on your profile along with how fluently. It is a real differentiator for beginners.

Nobody can tell you what you will earn here, and any platform that quotes you a number is quoting an average of other people. Your income is your rate multiplied by the lessons you actually get booked for, minus the platform fee. You control the first, you influence the second through your profile, your reviews and how many hours you open, and the fee is published as a live figure on our become-a-teacher page rather than written into marketing copy where it would eventually go stale.

External benchmarks are still useful for setting a first price. Reported ranges for online English tutoring put general tutoring at roughly $12 to $25 an hour, beginners at roughly $15 to $22, and experienced or specialised tutors, exam preparation in particular, at roughly $30 to $55. Those are largely US-facing figures. For the launch market the student-side numbers are more relevant: private English tutoring in Poland is commonly reported at around 55 to 90 zł per 60 minutes, around 100 to 170 zł with a native speaker, and up to roughly 400 zł an hour at the very top for intensive exam coaching.

The practical advice is to start inside the band for your profile rather than under it. Pricing far below the market to win the first bookings tends to attract the students who leave when you raise your rate, and it makes the raise a conversation you have to have with every existing student. A reasonable approach is to price at the lower end of your band while you are collecting your first reviews, then move up once the rating and the lesson count give a student a reason to pay it.

The money itself works like this. Students pay Vocabest when they book, before the lesson happens, so you are never chasing an invoice or teaching on the promise of payment. After you have delivered the lesson, your share, the price minus the platform fee, is transferred to you through Stripe and paid out to your bank account. Joining is free, there are no listing fees and no subscription. Setting up payouts is not a requirement to be approved or to be booked: you can teach first and add your bank details afterwards, and your share waits for you until you do.

Every student's first video consultation on Vocabest is free for them. From your side it is a short meeting, fifteen to thirty minutes, in which you meet a new student, find out what they need English for and explain how you would structure their lessons. It is not a free full lesson and it is not unlimited: it is each student's one first meeting, and it exists because a student who has already met you is dramatically more likely to book a paid lesson than one choosing from a photo.

Treat it as the most important twenty minutes of your week rather than an overhead. The consultations that convert follow a shape: ask what they actually need the language for, listen to them speak for long enough to judge the level yourself, name one specific thing you noticed and what you would do about it, and finish with a concrete proposal, this many lessons a week, starting here, aiming at that. Vague warmth loses to a specific plan almost every time.

Getting the first bookings is mostly profile work. Write the bio for one particular student rather than for everyone, because "I help adults who freeze in English meetings" gets booked and "passionate teacher of all levels" does not. Open genuine availability in the hours your students are actually free, which for working adults in the launch market means evenings and weekends in Central European Time. Record the intro video. And answer booking requests quickly; a fast reply is one of the few signals a student can read before they have paid you anything.

After that it compounds. Ratings and review counts sit on your card in the directory, lessons taught accumulate next to them, and both do the persuading that your bio cannot. The first few weeks are the slow part for everyone; the teachers who get past it are the ones who treated a half-empty calendar as a profile problem rather than a market one.
